Official Sources of TEAS Questions

Preparation is the key to attaining a high score in the TEAS test. Learning about the question types and the sources from where you could practice these questions is an important part of your preparation schedule. Before we go into the details of the questions, let’s go through a brief introduction about the test:

TEAS Test

The Test of Essential Academic Skills assess the skills of candidates to identify whether they have the potential to succeed in a nursing program or not. The abilities in the fields of Math, Science, English and Reading are assessed in this test.

Question Types

There are in total 170 questions and all of them are multiple-choice questions. Of this, 150 are scored and the remaining 20 are un-scored pre-test items.

The Math Section

Precision and accuracy is essential for a nursing student and therefore these two skills are primarily tested in the math section. Only basic math is tested here and the problems can be solved mentally or using a scratch paper. Also, use of calculators is prohibited. There are 45 test questions and the time limit for this section is 56 minutes. The subtopics tested in this section are:

  • Numbers and Operations
  • Algebraic Applications
  • Data Interpretation
  • Measurement

Further, the questions of this section deal with whole numbers, metric conversion, decimals, algebraic equations, fractions, ratio, proportions and percentages.

The Science Section

The knowledge and skills in the field of science are of utmost importance to the nursing profession. The time allotted for this section is 38 minutes and within this time 30 questions have to be answered. The sub-sections of this test are:

  • Human Body Science
  • Life Science
  • Earth and Physical Science
  • Scientific Reasoning

Cellular anatomy, physiology, various body systems, chemical anatomy, theoretical and mathematical physics are the areas from where questions would be asked.

The Reading Section

In the nursing field, reading and understanding of documents is essential and therefore, these skills are tested in this section. There are 40 questions asked in this test and the time limit is 50 minutes. The two sub-sections are:

  • Passage Comprehension
  • Paragraph Comprehension

For both the sub-sections, the students are required to understand the given passages and using their analytical and logical ability they would have to draw inferences. Questions pertaining to the passages are given at the end and the students are required to answer them with the information given in the passage alone.

The Language Section

Communication skills are one of the most important skills a nursing student should possess. The areas through which a student’s communication skills are assessed include:

  • Grammar and Word Meaning in Context
  • Spelling and Punctuations
  • Structure

There are 55 testing items and the time duration is 65 minutes.

Sources of TEAS Questions

The official website or other websites and books are the main sources of test questions.

Official TEAS Source– The ATI has released two online practice assessments and these are available for purchase. There are 150 questions in each of the test and one can take each test twice. The two tests are similar to the real one and once you take these tests, you would be clear on what would be asked in the test. Another major advantage of attempting these tests is that reasons and explanations for the correct choice of answer are given.
