Details About Average TEAS V Test Scores

Why should you Score above Average in TEAS

TEAS or the Test of Essential Academic Skills, is your gateway to a successful nursing career. For applying to nursing schools, you need to find out what scores do they consider. The test has four sections: Reading, Math, Science and Usage of English. Most nursing schools ask for a minimum score in each of the above mentioned sections. It is thus, advisable to target a score of at least 85% to be safe in securing a place in a good nursing school.

How is the TEAS Scored?

There are four sections in this test and a total of 170 questions. A composite score is derived by adding the number of correct responses from all four sections combined. This becomes your final composite score. Additionally, there are national and state-level mean scores, and national and state-level percentiles.

What are Average Scores?

There are two types of scores that include:

  1. The Average Score of the Program or SchoolThis refers to the mean scores of all applicants that apply to that particular college. This is the score that every applicant has to surpass. Most good schools have average TEAS V test scores of above 80-85%. As the quality of the nursing program or school goes down, the average scores that it asks for also reduces.
  2. The National and State-Level Mean ScoresThis refers to the scores of all students who have attempted the TEAS in a particular state or in the whole country. Generally, the national mean score is within the range of 65 to 75 percent.

The standard scores usually lie within the range of 60 to 70 percent for most nursing schools. For the best nursing schools and programs in the country, this value can go up to 85 percent.

Why You Need to Score Above the Average?

Each nursing school has its own benchmark when it comes to scores. This is the average of the scores of all applicants who have applied to the college. However, it should not be considered to be the score with which you can definitely gain admission to the college.

Consider the following illustration: A nursing school has 100 positions to fill in its nursing program. There are 400 applicants who are applying to that program. The mean score of all the applicants may be 60 percent. However, the school will admit the top 100 scoring students; and the top 100 scoring students will score more than 75 percent each.

Thus, the mean scores do not affect the chances of your admission. They just give you a fair idea of the scores of other applicants who are applying to the same college or program as you are. You need to surpass the basic scores of the colleges you are applying to. The higher your TEAS score, the higher would be your chances of gaining the desired admission.

Consider another example: For instance, if the score requirement for the college you are applying to is 70 percent. If you score 75 percent, your chances of securing a place in its program are bright. However, if you score 82 percent, your chances would be even brighter. On the other hand, an applicant who has scored 97 percent will have much brighter chances than you will have.

Thus, without taking the standard scores into much consideration, it is advisable to aim for the maximum score that you can achieve. To achieve those scores, you need to start preparing from today. You must shortlist the schools and programs to which you want to apply; find out their cut scores and set your own target score a little higher than their cut scores. The final step would be to acquire the study material you will need, to make a schedule and start practicing.
