All about the CPAT Test Results

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) was designed by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), in order to shortlist potential candidates for the professional line of firefighting. It should be known that the test results are extremely important for obtaining the certification for working with any of the State Fire Departments.

The CPAT Test:

The CPAT test is an extensive physical ability test designed to test the physical agility of candidates through a series of eight events set on a predetermined path. These events are Stair Climbing, Hose Drag, Equipment Carry, Ladder Raise and Extension, Forcible Entry, Search, Rescue, Ceiling Breach and Pull.

The stipulated time duration in which all events have to be completed is 10 minutes and 20 seconds. It is suggested that candidates should visit http://firesafety.vermont.gov/sites/firesafety/files/fire_academy/CPAT%20Orientation%20Guide.pdf in order to gain more information on the test events.

It should be known that the firefighting selection procedure includes of this test, a written exam and an oral interview with the Chief of the Fire Department after which the final results are declared.

The CPAT Test Result:

The test is a performance-based one where candidates are required to demonstrate extraordinary physical strength while performing each event. According to the testing pattern, limited warnings are given during each even in case of non-performance.

The result is mentioned as pass or fail. In case any candidate is unable to complete any event, he or she is declared failed. Moreover, there would be no additional attempts provided to the candidate in that particular test session.

4 Important Points about the Results:

It should be known that candidates can take the written test before or after the CPAT test; however, there are some important points that have to be kept in mind regarding the results.

  1. Re-taking the CPAT test: In case candidates are unable to clear this test in the first attempt, they can re-take this test within 90 days of the original test date. Their earlier result will not be considered in this case.
  2. Failure in Re-test for CPAT: According to the CPAT testing guidelines, candidates who are unable to clear the re-test have to register afresh to take the exam again after 90 days of the last testing date. Alongside, if candidates have already cleared the written test but have failed the CPAT test; then they have to wait for 90 days after the written test date to register for the CPAT test. Moreover, in such cases the result is considered as failed and the written test score is not considered until a fresh registration takes place after the stipulated time period.
  3. Written Test: It should be known that a successful CPAT attempt with a proof must be produced within 6 months (180 days) of taking the written exam in order to become eligible for the further procedures. The CPAT test may be taken before or after the written exam; however, the test result and the written examination dates must have a gap of 6 months.
  4. Oral Interview: Candidates are required to send their applications to the State Fire Department mentioning their result and written test score, after which a date would be given for the oral interview.

Even though it is not mandatory for candidates to take orientation or practice sessions conducted at the CPAT test centers, it is suggested that candidates avail at least 2 sessions of each prior to the CPAT test. These sessions would give a better insight about the test which candidates can utilize to enhance their result.

Since there are limited opportunities provided for this test, it is important for candidates to give proper time and focus on developing stamina through strength and endurance training work-outs. Finally, it must be known that the journey to become a certified firefighter depends on this test result; hence, candidates should be well-prepared to clear this test in fewer attempts.
