MTEL General Curriculum Test Explained

The MTEL tests are designed to evaluate the necessary skills of an aspiring educator in the state of Massachusetts. The successful completion of relevant tests along with other eligibility requirements entitles a candidate for the Massachusetts Tests Educator Licensure.

The General Curriculum test score is one of the mandatory requirements to obtain the Massachusetts Elementary Teaching license. This license authorizes one to teach general subjects to students of grades 1 to 6. A prospective educator in Massachusetts who is planning to apply for this license needs to be aware of the following information about the General Curriculum test.

What Does the General Curriculum Test Consist of?

The General Curriculum exam consists of two subtests which are administered and scored separately. You can choose to take both the subtests in one test session or in two different test sessions. The subtests are detailed below:

  • Multi-Subject Subtest:

    This subtest evaluates your subject matter knowledge which is required to teach elementary school students. The subareas covered under this subtest are:

    1. Language Arts: It makes 30 percent of the subtest. 5 test objectives are included most of which are related to English language structure, American Literature, Literature for children and writing elements.

    2. History and Social Science: It covers 30 percent of the subtest with 4 test objectives. The objectives are about developments in the History of United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    3. Science and Technology/Engineering: This subarea forms 30 percent of the subtest. It consists of 5 test objectives related to Life Science, Physical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, scientific discoveries and experimentation.

    4. Integration of Knowledge and Understanding: You are required to compose a written response on one of the topics mentioned in the other subareas. This makes 10 percent of the subtest.

  • Mathematics Subtest:

    The second section of the General Curriculum test is the Mathematics subtest. It tests your expertise in basic arithmetic operations. The subareas included in this subtest are:

    1. Numbers and Operations: It makes the major part of the subtest of around 41 percent. 4 test objectives are defined most of which are related to number functions.

    2. Functions and Algebra: It covers 22 percent of the subtest and 3 objectives that are related to algebraic functions.

    3. Geometry and Measurement: It makes 18 percent of the subtest and covers elementary concepts of Measurement and Geometry.

    4. Statistics and Probability: 9 percent of the subtest is covered by Statistics and Probability which are defined by 2 objectives.

    5. Integration of Knowledge and Understanding: It involves the application of mathematical knowledge and reasoning to solve a given mathematical problem that requires understanding and integration of more than one of the other 4 subareas.

What is the General Curriculum Test Format?

This test includes a total of 100 multiple-choice questions; 55 questions from the Multi-subject subtest and 45 from the Mathematics subtest. Both subtests also include one open-response question each. The number of questions pertaining to the individual subareas is tabulated below:
