The professional line of firefighting is an extremely demanding job and only potential candidates, who are capable to withstand the physical pressures of this job, are selected in this field. In order to ensure that the right candidates are selected for this job, the Orange County Fire Rescue Department (OCFRD) follows the Candidate Physical Ability Test commonly known as the CPAT.

About the CPAT:

According to the test, there are eight events which have to be completed successfully in the given time-frame of 10 minutes and 20 seconds. These events are Stair Climbing, Hose Drag, Equipment Carry, Ladder Raise and Extension, Forcible Entry, Search, Rescue, Ceiling Breach and Pull. It should be known that the format of testing is performance based and requires the candidates to be physically trained before attempting this test.

It should also be known that the results are declared immediately as Pass or Fail. In order to perform in the test events, candidates have to demonstrate exceptional physical strength. Failure to complete the events in the stipulated time or defaulting more than the opportunities given according to the test guidelines leads to the disqualification of the candidates from this test.

The CPAT Orange County Test- California:

The California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC) has been conducting the test since 1999 for aspiring candidates who desire to become firefighters in the State of California. The CFFJAC is a well-known institute which provides training on developing firefighting skill sets.

  • Test Centers: There are currently test CFFJAC centers available at three locations which are designed for firefighting training and testing. Apart from the testing center in California‚Äôs Orange County, there are test centers in Livermore and Sacramento as well.

  • Test Registration: It is important for candidates to register early for the test since there are limited test dates made available for every month.   • Eligibility Criteria: The eligibility criteria for candidates to apply for the test is as follows:

    1. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. They must have a valid photo identification issued by the government.

  • Test Preparation: The test schedule consists of orientation classes, practice tests and test dates. Candidates can register for these classes for a specific fee which includes two orientation classes for around 2 hours each. It is suggested that candidates take these classes eight weeks prior to the test dates.
    Apart from this, there are two timed practice sessions conducted by CFFJAC which are charged separately. However, it is recommended that candidates should avail these sessions within 30 days of taking the test.

  • Test Fee: The fee for CFFJAC CPAT orientation and test is $150. This fee is exclusive of the timed practice sessions.
