What is TOEFL TWE of the Paper Based TOEFL?

The test was administered in two different formats earlier; one was the Paper-based Test (PBT) and the other was the Computer-based Test (CBT). In the year 2005, the CBT was replaced by the Internet-based Test (iBT) which enabled testing for more number of candidates simultaneously. Presently, both the test formats are in existence. All over the world, the iBT is taken by a larger number of candidates rather than the PBT. The PBT is administered in those test locations and countries where the internet facilities are meager.

What is TOEFL and What does it Contain?

This is a standardized English language testing exam. It is published, owned, managed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The scores of this test are accepted by more than 8500 institutes throughout the world in order to admit candidates to their undergraduate and graduate programs. The PBT consists of three test sections and a writing test that lasts for 30 minutes. This 30-minute writing test is called as the Test of Written English or TWE. The PBT costs you US $160 and it includes the fee for written test. The TWE involves one writing task, which you have to complete in the allotted time of 30 minutes. Moreover, for your test paper to be evaluated, you must attempt atleast one question in each of the sections. This means that you have to necessarily write the essay for the writing section since there is only one question in this section. This section is evaluated on a scale ranging between 1 and 6.

The Test of Writing English of the PBT complements the Writing section of the Internet-based test. You will be given one essay writing topic, which will be of general importance. The topics selected are usually of the kind that generate an opinion difference among individuals and they cover a multitude of subjects. Since you are allotted 30 minutes for the task, you will be expected to present your essay in 300-400 words. The TWE score is not reported by adding it to the total score instead it is reported in a separate box and hence reflects your writing abilities separately.
