Scoring for TOEFL Explained
TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is taken by non-native speakers of English who wish to pursue graduate and undergraduate courses in colleges and universities where English is the native language, and for other reasons. The test is conducted in the following two formats:
- TOEFL iBT: This test is conducted online in most countries.
- TOEFL PBT: This is the paper-based test that is taken by students of those countries that do not have access to online facility.
The TOEFL scores are accepted by several colleges or other professional bodies that are spread across many countries throughout the world. The test contains the following four sections:
By taking this test, TOEFL aspirants demonstrate their ability of expression in Standard English. Proficiency in the language is required for academic purposes at the college or university level wherein you will be required to use the Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills in the most appropriate manner that is required to perform well in academic tasks. This is possible only if you get good TOEFL scores.
Scoring for TOEFLiBT
The TOEFL score report includes the following information:
- TOEFL scores of individual sections,
- The total score obtained by the candidates,
- Feedback about their performance
- What each individual is able to achieve with their score. The test takers receive the score report around two weeks after the test date.
- The score of each section is provided on a scale of 0 to 30 and the total score represents the sum total of the scores that is obtained in each section.
Scores for Speaking Section
For this section, the responses are sent to the scoring network of ETS where the initial scores are provided by examiners on a scale of 0 to 4. Followed by this, the average score of all the six tasks is converted to the standard scale of 0 to 30. The students must understand that their recorded responses in each section might vary or they may not necessarily resemble the speaking style of a native English speaker. In this section, the TOEFL scores are based on their ability to communicate with efficacy and to complete the tasks that are assigned in this section.
Scores for Writing Section
In the Writing Section, the initial TOEFL scores are provided on a scale of 0 to 5. The average score of all the writing tasks is converted to a scale of 0 to 30. In this section, there are two writing tasks, which measure their ability to think and write their responses on the given topics.
Scores for Reading and Listening Sections
For the Reading and Listening sections, the TOEFL scores are given by the computer in the range of 0 to 30. While the Reading section contains 36 to 70 tasks, the Listening section contains 34 to 51 tasks based on reading from academic structures and listening to lectures, conversations or discussions that are held in classrooms.
The total score is given on a range of 0 to 120 as a representation of the sum total of TOEFL scores that is obtained in each section and the scores remain valid for a period of two years.
Scores for TOEFL PBT
The score reports for PBT are provided five weeks after the test date, but the students can access their scores through telephone on the specific dates when this service is available by paying the fees that are required for the same. The score range for the PBT test are as follows:
- Structure and Written Expression: 31-68
- Reading: 31 to 67
- Listening: 31-68
The total score is recorded in the range of 310 to 677.
