iBT TOEFL Scores

What does the iBT TOEFL Score Card Contain

The iBT TOEFL is the Internet-based TOEFL test. The scores are calculated in a very interesting and different manner. It is a language test and its scores do not determine the pass or fail status for any candidate but they simply denote the competence of the individual in the English language for academic purposes. The results are mere reflections of the scores of a candidate in light of the answers that he/she gives in the test.

The iBT scores have two aspects:

  1. The sectional-scores
  2. The total test scores

1. The iBT Sectional Scores

There are four sections in this test. The four sections are: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. All the sections are scored on a scale that ranges from 0-30. The actual correct answers from every section are scored and the total from every section is measured on this scale. The Reading and Listening sections are scored differently from the Writing and Speaking sections of the test.

Details of the Scores for the Reading and Listening Sections of the TOEFL:

  • The Reading and Listening sectional-scores of the TOEFL are computerised.
  • A score in the range 22-30 is a High score.
  • A score in the range of 15-21 is an Intermediate score.
  • A score in the range of 0-14 is a Low score.

Details of the Scores for the Writing and Speaking Sections of the TOEFL:

  • The scores for the Writing and Speaking sections are measured automatically through computers and also by ETS raters.
  • ETS raters are specially trained and hired by TOEFL administrators i.e. the ETS to score the test.
  • Human judgement is very important for scoring the Writing and Speaking abilities of candidates because only human beings can measure softer aspects like quality of the content, flow of thought, ideas etc.
  • The dual- scoring process also eliminates any room for miscalculations and errors of judgement while allotting the scores.

The Speaking Section Score Demarcations:

  • Each speaking task is scored in a range of 0-4.
  • The total scores of each task are then averaged on the scale of 0-30.
  • A score in the range of 26-30 is a Good score.
  • A score in the range of 18-25 is a Fair score.
  • A score in the range of 10-17 is a Limited score.
  • A score in the range of 0-9 is a Weak score.

The Writing Section Score Demarcations:

  • Each writing task is scored in a range of 0-5.
  • The total scores of each task are then averaged on the scale of 0-30.
  • A score in the range of 24-30 is a Good score.
  • A score in the range of 17-23 is a Fair score.
  • A score in the range of 1-16 is a Limited score.

2. The Total Test Scores

The iBT TOEFL scores are declared as separate sectional-scores and also as the total of the sectional-scores. The sectional scores are measured on a scale of 0-30. The total score is arrived at by adding the scaled scores of each of the four sections of the test and then expressing them on the scale of 0-120. When the results of the TOEFL test are declared, then the candidate is given both the section-wise calculation of scores along with the total scores.

Things to Remember about the Scores for the iBT TOEFL

  • The test is not scored on-site.
  • The scores are calculated in a unique manner and every candidate should visit the official website www.ets.org to get the correct and updated information about it.
  • They are calculated through computerised as well as human calculations therefore, one should keep in mind that even though the computers might accept rehearsed answers but, the ETS raters will not accept them.
  • There is a difference in the scores that a candidate receives and the total of the number of correct answers in the test. They should not be confused with one another as the scores given in the iBT TOEFL score card of candidates are an expression of their softer aspects like quality of language used and the ability in the language as well.
  • Scores are measured on a scale so that a true comparison between the many test takers can be done.
  • The technology that is used for calculation ensures that the scores are consistently and correctly expressed.
