TOEFL Score in Various Formats

There are three formats in which TOEFL has been conducted in the past. These are the paper-based test, computer based test and the Internet based test. Out of these, the computer-based test has long been replaced by the Internet based test in most of the areas, with an exception of some places. That is why, the two popular formats of TOEFL are the paper-based test and the Internet based test. However, all the three formats of TOEFL are considerably different in terms of scoring scheme.

Since there is a different in their format, there is also a difference in the way they are scored. That is why comparing the average TOEF scores of one format with another becomes difficult. In order to make the task of comparing TOEFL scores from an Internet based test to a paper based test easier for colleges, ETS releases a chart of comparison of scores. This chart can be used for comparing scores while granting admissions.

The Internet based TOEFL has four scored sections of 30 marks each, making the maximum of 120. On the other hand, the paper-based test has three scored sections, the maximum marks of which come up to 677. Therefore, the average TOEFL score obtained in an Internet based test is different from average TOEFL Score in paper-based test.
