The TOEFL test is a Test of English as a Foreign Language. For non-native speakers of English this test is a standardization test to test their English proficiency. It was first administered in the year 1964. More than 2000 institutions in the United States and Canada seek the TOEFL score list from the applicants. The TOEFL test is just one of the entry tickets to the admission process in the universities. For a foreign student to study in the American states or other universities abroad a TOEFL test score is mandatory.

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers and writes the TOEFL test. In the year 1998 July onwards the ETS came up with a computer version of the TOEFL test. The paper based test also does exist in most of the countries. From Oct 2000 onwards the TOEFL test has become computer based. The ETS has authorized agencies to administer the test formalities in each country. In India the Sylvan Testing Services Pvt Ltd is the authorized franchisee of the ETS. Candidates from UK, US, Ireland and Australia need not take the TOEFL test. The TOEFL test is divided in to four sections of Listening Comprehension, Structure, Reading Comprehension and Writing. The wrong answers do not carry any negative marking but the first two sections must be compulsorily answered. The total TOEFL test is for a score of 300 marks.

There is no limitation for the exam schedule. The candidate can take the test any day from Monday to Friday either morning or evening. September- December is the season time for the TOEFL test. If one intends to take the test during this period he must register in advance. The test takes about four hours to complete. The TOEFL test is conducted in over 180 countries. Since its inception, more than 20 million students have taken up the TOEFL test.
