The TEAS

What Makes the TEAS Test Important?

If you are keen on becoming a professional nurse, you would be aware that the journey towards reaching your goal commences only if you clear the TEAS test. Through a high TEAS score, you can get admission into a strong nursing program affiliated with a reputed university. Institutes seek potential candidates who can be groomed into quality nurses through their nursing programs. Therefore, it is important for them to choose the right candidates with the required competencies for the program.

However, this process is not easy as it seems. Since there are many candidates who apply for nursing programs, the institutes are left with the critical task of shortlisting eligible candidates. In order to simplify the shortlisting procedure, the TEAS exam was made mandatory.

More about the TEASTest:

The TEAS is a pre-nursing school entrance exam for those who choose to study nursing as their post-secondary education. The Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a psychometric tool designed by ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) for competency mapping for essential skills required by nursing programs.

The TEAS test is in the multiple-choice format and has 170 questions. It is divided into 4 time-bound sections which are scored separately. The four sections are the Reading section, the Math section, the Science section and the English and Language Usage section, respectively. The TEAS test is available in the computer-based format and in the paper-format; however, institutes prefer the online exam. Each section in the TEAS test is designed to assess a certain skill set or competency.

More about TEAS test sections:

  • The Reading section has 40 questions based with a time limit of 50 minutes. These questions are based on comprehension or paragraph reading and are given for deducing an inference. Hence, logical reasoning and data inference is assessed through this section.
  • The Math section would have 45 questions with a time limit of 56 minutes. The questions are based on metric conversions, fractions, algebra, percentiles, ratio and proportion etc. Since calculators are not allowed, the candidates are tested for their precision and accuracy.
  • The Science section has 30 questions with a time limit of 38 minutes. This section has questions based on biological, chemical and physical concepts.
  • The English and Language Usage section has 55 questions with a time limit of 65 minutes, which are based on basic grammar and its application.

Selection Process for Nursing Programs:

The score for the TEAS test is declared immediately after the exam. You would receive a copy of your scores on your e-mail as well. The TEAS scorecard is an extensive report which mentions the overall performance, the section wise performance along with the Program Mean. You would receive your score under the following heads: The Adjusted Individual Score, National mean, Program mean, Percentile rank - National and Percentile rank - Program.

It is this detailed assessment that institutes rely on, during their shortlisting process. The TEAS score happens to be the most crucial deciding factor while considering a candidate for admission into any nursing program.

However, it should be known that there are no TEAS passing criteria set by ATI. In fact, the cut off percentiles are decided by the schools themselves. Every school would have their own benchmark and this may vary from institute to institute. Therefore, it is important for you to check with the university guidelines about the cut-off percentile ranges before applying.

Hence, it is important for you do well in the TEAS test so that you can secure a good position in a reputed university for your desired nursing program.

Preparing for the TEAS test:

Although many TEAS study resources are available in the offline as well as the online market, it is important that you choose those that wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, ATI has developed TEAS specific study material that is available on its official website. Any good TEAS resource you choose for your studies has to be well reviewed and reliable. It would contain rich question bank, appropriate rationales and extensive theory relevant to the TEAS test. It would also have helpful tips and strategies which you can apply to ace the test successfully.

The demand for nurses is growing day by day and shows no signs of slowing down. In light of this fact, the competition for the TEAS is increasing as well. It is important that you secure a good position in a reputed university to give your nursing career a great head start!
