TEAS V Study
Precautions to Take When Preparing for TEAS
Though several months of preparation is generally not required for the TEAS, it should not be considered that the test concepts can be mastered overnight. The version V, in particular, needs adequate preparation. On an average, a two-week study preparation is recommended for test takers although it depends, to a larger extent, on the skill level of the student. Here is a brief guide for the test and important precautions to take during the test preparation.
- Collect Study Materials
Study materials include books which can give you detailed explanations about the test subject areas, books which provide you practice questions, CDs which help you to take full-length tests, online books, online practice tests and study tools like flashcards etc. You need to do a little research about the available resources and collect those study guides which you think will be useful to you.
Precaution #1: Do Not Spend Too Much Time in Collecting Study Materials:
A common misconception is that more the number of study books one refers to, more effective will be the preparation. However, practically, the use of 1 to 3 references is sufficient for the test preparation. In fact, too many books could create confusion. Therefore, you should not spend more than the required time to procure your test prep sources.
- Plan a Study Schedule
Analyze the four test sections and the tasks pertaining to each. Make a list of the topics that you are confident about and those in which you need to improve. Based on the available time, allot a few hours or days to review each section, to solve test questions and to practice time-based full tests.
Precaution #2: Do Not Assume Familiar Topics as Your Areas of Expertise:
Though some topics might seem familiar to you, it need not necessarily be one of your strong subject areas. Hence, judge your potential in each sub-area carefully and do not let the familiarity of a topic deceive you.
- Practice Solving Problems and Questions
Begin solving questions at the end of each section review or sub-task review rather than solving questions after the completion of the full content review. An effective preparation sharpens your skills of critical thinking, quick solving etc. which can be done by repeated practice of solving test questions.
Precaution #3: Do Not Use Calculators for Solving Mathematical Problems:
Although calculators are an easy option to choose while preparing for TEAS, it is best to prepare without using one. You need to remember that calculators are not allowed at the actual test and you need to work-out all the arithmetic operations by yourself. Therefore, make sure to do the calculations mentally or using sheets during your test preparation.
- Take Sample Tests
Attempting to solve individual topic tests might be easier but solving a timed full-length test could be difficult, initially. In order to gain experience in answering test questions within the given time, you need enough practice of taking such tests which are provided by many prep books.
Precaution #4: Do Not Postpone Taking Timed Practice Tests to the Last Minute:
Most students make the mistake of taking full-length tests at the last minute of the test preparation. Hence, you must remember to dedicate sufficient time for full-length tests in order to evaluate your proficiency levels in specific subject areas and to get trained in attending time-based tests.
- Prepare for the Test Day
Keep ready the things that you need to carry on the test day like photo ID, ATI ID and pencils etc., beforehand. Also, be sure of the driving directions or the mode of transport to the test center in order to avoid confusion on the day of the test.
Precaution #5: Do Not Overstrain on the Previous Night of the Exam:
You need to work as hard as you can during your test preparatory weeks but give a day-off on the previous day of your exam. You need adequate sleep and rest on the previous night of the exam. Hence, you must not postpone any study work until the last minute.
Your preparation will prove meaningful and effective if you follow a planned schedule. However, in case the planned schedule goes out of your way, it should not worry you. Thus, it is important to achieve a positive mental preparedness before beginning your test preparation.
