TEAS Test Science

Everything You Need to Know about TEAS Test Science

TEAS test is a test of aptitude, designed specifically for students who are considering entering into nursing programs. Colleges and institutions take into account, the applicant's TEAS test score for admission into the nursing courses. Hence, it is important for prospective nursing students to refresh their knowledge and skills, in preparation for the TEAS test.

The TEAS test is available in both computer-based and paper-based formats. Students need to answer a total of 170 questions which are provided with multiple choices. The total duration of the test is 209 minutes. The number of test questions and duration of the test are spread across four sections, which are:

  • Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • English and Language Usage

Most of the entrance and competitive examinations include reading, mathematics and English language courses. However, a science course is a part of a few special tests only. Hence, the TEAS test science carries a special significance as it is the most unique part of this test. This article shall discuss in detail the science section of the TEAS test.

TEAS Test Science - Format and Scoring

The TEAS test science makes almost one third of the full TEAS test. It consists of 54 questions which are to be answered in 66 minutes. So, you will have approximately 1.2 minutes for every question. The TEAS test does not define a minimum passing score. However, individual colleges have a cut-off score set, which a student is required to achieve to enter into their nursing courses. Hence, there is no ideal score for the TEAS test. How much a student needs to score depends on his/her college of preference.

TEAS Test Science - Syllabus

General topics covered by the TEAS test science section are:

  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Science reasoning and knowledge

Having a fundamental knowledge of the various physiological systems in the human body and a basic understanding of diseases will be helpful when you get enrolled into a nursing course. This is exactly what the biology, anatomy and physiology portions intend to test. It will determine how well you will be able to cope up with the biological terms and concepts. Similarly, a thorough standing on the physical sciences is essential to understand the diagnosis and treatment mechanisms that you would be learning in the nursing courses. Likewise, you must relate the test topics with your future course of study for an enthusiastic preparation.

TEAS Test Science - Preparation

On the lighter side, what you are expected to know to score well in the TEAS test science section is just your high-school science. However, not everybody can remember all that they have studied in their high-school science courses. So, a good revision of what you have studied in the last few years is what is required of you to do towards TEAS test science preparation.

The ATI website provides preparation books for the TEAS test. All the concepts covered by the science section will be explained in these books. Also, practice questions and tests will be available which can help you in your self-assessment. By taking the practice tests, you will get to identify the areas where you need to spend relatively more time and effort.

Apart from books, you can check online video tutorials on basic science concepts which are an effective mode of learning. Also, collect sample test questions from guides and websites to take more number of mock test sessions. There are a few websites which offer flashcards on biological terminologies for quicker and easier learning.

As a final note, it should be pointed out that blind memorizing is a common, but wrongly practiced mode of study towards science tests. However, all test takers must remember that TEAS test science is a means to evaluate the preparedness of future students and not intended to measure their expertise in nursing profession. It only tests the knowledge of students who wish to enroll into a nursing program. Hence, students are not expected to know everything that a trained nurse would know, in order to pass in the TEAS test.
