Eligibility Criteria for TEAS Test 5

The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a standardized and proctored multiple-choice based test given by applicants who wish to pursue nursing as a career. It helps in ascertaining whether the applicants will be able to adapt to the arduous nursing program or not. It is administered and conducted by Assessment Technologies Institute, ATI. The registration for it can be done on the official website of ATI: www.atitesting.com.

TEAS, also known as TEAS test 5 covers topics from the subjects of Math, Reading, Science and Use of language. The test fee is 40$ and has to be paid at the time of registering for the test. A student can take the exam only twice in one academic cycle a student can retake the exam only once within a time duration of 365 days). There is no limit to the total number of times a student can take the test. However, between two attempts, a minimum gap of 45 days has to be maintained. The use of calculators is not allowed in the test.

What is TEAS Test 5?

The Test of Essential Academic Skills is the requirement for all the aspirants who apply to various universities for nursing courses in the United States of America. The TEAS Test 5 is a version of the TEAS that consists of four main areas: Reading, Math, Science, and English and language.

What Question Types are there on the TEAS 5?

The exam is developed by leading educators especially those belonging to the field of nursing. Each question is validated by psychometricians. There are a total of 170 questions in the entire exam. The results are available within 48 hours of completing the test.

  3. Science
    1. There are 48 items in this section that make up for 32% of total TEAS test 5 items.

      1. There are 11 items in Scientific Reasoning that make up for 7.3% of test items.
      2. There are 15 items in Human Body Science that make up for 10% of test items.
      3. There are 14 items in Life Science that make up for 9.3 % of test items.
      4. There are 8 items in Earth and Physical Science that make up for 5.3% of test items.

  4. English and language usage
    1. There are 30 items in this section that make up for 20% of test items

      1. There are 15 items in Grammar and Word meaning that make up for 10% of test items.
      2. There are 9 items in Spelling and Punctuation that make up for 6% of test items.
      3. There are 6 items in Structure that make up for 4% of test items.
    2. The total time for this section of TEAS test 5 is 34 minutes.

The maximum amount of time allotted to complete the test is 209 minutes (about 3.5 hours).

Eligibility for TEAS Test 5

Any applicant who is considering applying to any nursing program must take the TEAS test 5 before the last application deadline. On the TEAS Test 5 score report, the applicant see his or her Academic Preparedness Level and Cut Score.

TEAS Scores are divided into various levels. The highest level being Exemplary, then Advanced, Proficient, Basic and the least level is Developmental. Different universities have their specific requirements. Exemplary, being the highest level would suffice any university's requirement.

Most institutes and colleges ask for a score not less than the basic Level. In terms of percentage, most colleges have their cut-off percentages. However, to be on the safe side, one can consider a score of 65% to be the minimum requirement. There are colleges that may accept lower scores. However, the aim should be made for the higher score only so that one can achieve the goal of having a successful nursing career easily.
