ATI TEAS Exam Question Types Explained

ATI TEAS exam is an aptitude test for nursing aspirants in the United States of America. Colleges use the TEAS scores to arrive at decisions regarding the suitability of the nursing aspirants for admission in nursing courses offered by their colleges. The TEAS examination has four sections: Mathematics, Science, Reading, and English and Language Usage. The examinee has to attempt a total of 170 questions in 3.5 hrs in this test. The ATI TEAS scores are considered mandatory for evaluating the essential academic skills of nursing aspirants by many prestigious colleges. Different Sections of TEAS

The ATI TEAS exam comprises four sections, each of which is discussed below:

  • Science- This is the largest section of the TEAS. It covers 32 % of the entire question paper. The individual portions of this section, in order of their constituent percentages, are:

    Life Science- 10 %
    Earth and Physical Science- 9 %
    Human Body Science- 7 %
    Scientific Reasoning- 5 %

    You have to be thorough with high school level general science in order to do well in this section. As nursing is a healthcare profession, it requires one to have adequate scientific knowledge. This section tests a nursing aspirant's aptitude in science.

  • Reading- This section, which forms 28 percent of the entire ATI TEAS exam paper, consists of two sections- the Passage Comprehension section and the Paragraph Comprehension section. The entire section presents 42 questions in total, with 23 questions from the Passage Comprehension section and 19 questions from the Paragraph Comprehension section. You are given 40 minutes in all to answer this section.

  • This section tests a person's ability to understand a given text and logically derive answers from the information presented in the text. The questions in this section are of varying levels of difficulty. Since some of the questions do not require in-depth deductive skills, while others do. It is important for the examinee to remember that the approach to answering should be as instructed by the answering guidelines of the section, even though the answers arrived at do not necessarily match those one would ideally give in real life situations.

  • Mathematics- This section, which comprises 20 percent of the entire ATI TEAS exam paper, has 30 questions on the whole which need to be answered in 54 minutes. The Numbers & Operations section, consisting of 19 questions, forms the major part of this section. At the same time, questions on Algebraic Expressions and Measurement, consisting of four questions each, are to be answered in this section. Data Interpretation, consisting of three questions, constitutes the last smallest sub-section of the Mathematics section of the ATI TEAS Exam.

  • You may wonder why mathematics skills are important for a nursing aptitude assessment. The reason for this is that an examinee's mental agility and precision are indicated by his performance in mathematics. The mathematics questions of TEAS are simple and are not aimed at testing an examinee's mathematical ability, but his/her mental efficiency. Calculators are not allowed as the questions do not require complex calculations.

  • English and Language Usage- This section, constituting 20 % of the ATI TEAS exam paper, consists of 30 questions on the whole, which need to be answered at a pace of 1 minute/question. Half the questions of this section are from the Grammar and Word Meaning sub-sections. The Spelling and Punctuation section consists of 9 questions, and the third section on Structure consists of 6 questions.

  • English is the primary language of formal and informal communication. The nursing profession involves a lot of written and oral communication. Hence, the English proficiency of the nursing aspirants is tested by nursing colleges with the help of the ATI TEAS exam.

ATI TEAS Exam Scores

The TEAS examination does not specify a passing or failing score. However, colleges have their own set of minimum scores that a student needs to procure in the ATI TEAS exam for getting admission in a nursing course in a college of their choice.
