SAT ii Biology
Everything You Want to Know about SAT ii Biology Test
The SAT ii Biology test is a subject test offered to students by the College Board. It tests students for basic principles in biology that are studied in high school. Students that are interested in studying biology as a major or those who wish to show their inclination towards biology when making their college applications take the SAT ii Biology test. There are two Biology tests, Biology Ecological (Biology-E) and Biology Molecular (Biology-M). Students can pick either one depending on their areas of interest. Applicants interested in studying aspects such as energy flow, life cycles and biological populations choose the Biology-E test whereas those interested in aspects such as photosynthesis, cell structures and biochemistry picks Biology-M. Students are to mark the type of SAT ii Biology test they wish to take while appearing for the test. You cannot take the Biology-E and Biology-M tests on the same day but may do so on different test dates.
Test Paper Structure
Both the SAT ii Biology tests are timed at 60 minutes. The tests contain 60 common questions of the total 80 questions. This would mean that only 20 questions differ between the Biology-E and Biology-M paper. Both the tests are scored on a scale from 200-800 points and contain only Multiple Choice Questions. The test paper might require minor calculations to get answers to questions and the test takers are not allowed to use a calculator. Also measurements are expressed in the metric system.
Preparation time and recommendations
The SAT ii Biology test both Ecological and Molecular test students on basic concepts in biology and their application. Students are expected to be able to solve algebraic expressions and use the principles and theories of biology and through its application to answer the test questions. The College Board recommends that a student should have studied an introductory college course in Biology, a year of Algebra and practical experience in a laboratory. It involves testing students on grounds of basic concepts and knowledge, Application and Interpretation in the bifurcation of 30%, 35% and 35% respectively. It requires the test taker to be able to conclude and resolve questions through observations, information and application of theory. You should also be familiar with the metric system as answers are to be given in the metric system. The SAT ii Biology subject matter includes the concepts of Cellular and Molecular biology, Ecology, Genetics, Organismal Biology and Evolution and diversity. These are the concepts that are tested in both Biology-E and Biology-M, however the depth of subject matter and weightage of marks allotted to each chapter differ in both the tests. To read more about the marks allotted to these chapters visit http://sat.collegeboard.org/practice/sat-subject-test-preparation/biology-em#topicsOnTheTestTwirldown.
