What Is PSAT?

PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT. It is also called National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). It is a standardized entrance test administered world-wide for the students who wish to be awarded with scholarships for their education post to their high school. The PSAT is administered by the College Board and is co-sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) of the USA. PSAT Admissions Guide

PSAT is a two-hour and ten-minute examination that will contain three sections namely the Math section, Critical Reading section and the Writing Skills section. It is evaluated on a score scale of 20-80 points for each section individually thus taking the maximum evaluated score to a range between 60 and 240. Your scores, depending upon certain factors that NMSC decides, will be considered for the determination of your eligibility for the scholarship competition. Annually, it is estimated that almost 3.5 million students take the test. Out of which, nearly 1.5 million enter the scholarship competition. There are further screening rounds like the semi final and the final rounds. According to the College Board, 15000-16000 students enter the final round of the scholarship competition.

Test Registrations

Unlike for the SAT, you cannot register for the PSAT online. You will have to register for the test via a high school in your community that is a member of the College Board. This is because only those high schools that are member of College Board can administer the test. The PSAT is not administered directly by the College Board through test centers like SAT.
