Significance of Math for MTEL

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is a computer-based evaluation test conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. It judges the tutors and educational professionals seeking a licence to teach students of prekindergarten to grade 12. The test evaluates the subject expertise of educators in the license they aspire for along with gauging their levels of proficiency in their communication with students, parents, guardians and their co-faulty. This includes a varied list of subject subtests like Math MTEL, Science, English, History, Reading, Theatre, Visual Art and more.

Math MTEL Sub-Test

  1. The Math Subject is covered in the sub-tests namely;

    • General Curriculum and
    • Mathematics or Elementary Mathematics or Mathematics (Middle School)

  2. Test Format: It includes multiple-choice questions with four options to choose from and open-response questions.

  3. Test Duration: Duration of each subtest is 4 hours.

  4. Test Structure for General Curriculum Math MTEL Subtest:

    • It includes 45 multiple-choice questions with four options to choose from.

    • It includes 1 open-response question where the candidate is required to spend about 20-30 minutes to prepare for the response.

    • Test Content(a): 90% of the test content comprises of-

      1. Numbers & Operations
      2. Functions & Algebra
      3. Geometry & Measurement
      4. Statistics & Probability
    • Test Content (b): 10% of the test content is based on Integration of Knowledge & Understanding

  5. Test Structure for Subject Matter Math MTEL Tests:

    • It includes 100 multiple-choice questions with four options to choose from.

    • It includes 2 open-response questions where the candidate is required to spend about 20-30 minutes to prepare for the response.

    • Test Content(a): 90% of the test content comprises of-

      1. Number Sense & Operations
      2. Patters, Relations & Algebra
      3. Geometry & Measurement
      4. Data Analysis, Statistics, Probability
      5. Trigonometry, Calculus & Discrete Mathematics
    • Test Content (b): 10% of the test content is based on Integration of Knowledge & Understanding.
