MCAT Application Options and Processes
MCAT is a standardized test administered by Association of American Medical Colleges. The American Medical Colleges Application Service or the AMCAS is a non-profit service. It helps students who are applying to the first year entering class of the US medical schools. Most medical schools use this application service, the MCAT test as a primary method for their medical school's application process.
If you are planning to apply for the medical colleges, just one online application to the AMCAS would be enough. It does not give any advice to the applicant on the colleges to apply nor in the medical school's application process.
Application for MCAT can be done only online at the AAMC's website, https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/reserving/. The application form requires you to furnish your personal details like name, date of birth, parents' names, schools attended, extra curricular activities and list of honors and awards received. The details furnished must be accurate and the name should be given exactly as it is in an ID card. The ID card must be carried to the exam center. If there is any discrepancy in the name, you will not be allowed to sit for the test. Your phone number and e- mail ID that are current should be given. If there is any change in the venue of the test, the AAMC will communicate the same to you by mail or over phone. So if there is any change, you must convey to them the changes in the phone number or email ID.
The registration for the test begins 12 weeks before the test date. Try to register for a date convenient and suitable to you at least 60 days before the test date. This will ensure, you get the date and center you applied for. The allotment of centers is on the first-come first-served basis. A very important point to be noted is that AAMC is very strict about the deadlines. The deadline dates are never changed. So, applying early will give you time to apply again if you face any hassles while applying online.
Application for MCAT would be incomplete without paying the registration fee. The registration fee is $240. Registration closes 14 days prior to the test date. Late registration is allowed for another 7 days with an additional fee of $70. Date rescheduling and change of test center can be requested with a fee of $70 each. If you want to take up the test at a different international site then you have to pay $80.The only option for the payment of the test fee and other fees is by using the Visa or MasterCard. Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards are accepted. For students from economically backward families, the AAMC offers the Fee Assistance Program. Instead of $240 as the registration fee, the students who avail of this program are required to pay only $85.
In case of a cancellation for regular students $115 is refunded and for the students who have taken the fee assistance program the whole amount of $85 paid toward the registration fee is refunded. Other special fees (Center change fee, late registration fee etcetera.) are not refunded.
A completion of a course work in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English is a pre-requisite for the test. A sound knowledge is science concepts and principles are essential for medical studies. Thus the MCAT tests these principles and concepts.
Options available for you to register and complete application on the test date and centers are available to you. Tests are conducted from April to September. You can choose a convenient date. You can also choose the center closest to you. If your dream in life is to join a medical school, application for MCAT is the first step you take towards fulfilling that dream.
