Good MCAT Score

7 Tips to Obtain Good MCAT Score

MCAT is a test that has been administered since last 80 years by the Association of American Medical Colleges or AAMC for those students who are interested to pursue the study of Medicine in the United States and Canada. The score of MCAT is considered as an integral part of the admission procedure in the medical schools. The test is conducted from January through September in the United States and Canada and in specific locations all over the world. The four sections of MCAT include the following:

  • Physical Sciences: In this section, the questions are related to the problem solving ability of the students in Physics and Chemistry.
  • Verbal Reasoning: The questions in this section are related to the students' ability to decipher the arguments that are provided in a passage.
  • Writing Sample: This section includes two essays of 30 minutes each.
  • Biological Sciences: In this section, the students are supposed to solve problems of biology and organic chemistry.

MCAT Score

The students are allotted separate scores for each section of MCAT. Barring the Writing Sample, the other three sections are scored on a level of 1 to 15, where 1 is the lowest score and 15 is the highest. The raw scores are calculated at first then converted into the appropriate scale ranging from 1 to 15. The conversion of raw score ensures equality and a better assessment of the skill and competence of each student. As far as the Writing Sample is concerned, it is scored twice on a range of 1 to 6, which is the raw score and then converted to an alphabetic scale ranging from J to T where J is the lowest and T is the highest. The students can get similar alphabetic scores despite differences in individual scores.

Although it is difficult to predict what a good score is, a student should get around 11 or more to qualify for getting admission in top medical schools. On the other hand, there are several factors that should be considered while determining good marks. These factors include the branch of Medicine that a student wants to opt followed by GPA and the school to which he/she has applied. For seeking admission in John Hopkins or Harvard School of Medicine, a student should get anywhere around 11.6 to 11.9, which is considered as a good score.

7 Tips to Obtain Good MCAT Score

As far as MCAT scores are concerned, it is difficult to suggest winning strategies for getting a good test score. However, the general tips listed below can help the students to get on with this examination without much difficulty:

  • The MCAT applicants should remember that it is not possible to get winning scores by taking too many courses or buying good books unless they are able to implement those strategies on the final day of the exam.
  • For obtaining a good score, an applicant should select the test dates carefully and complete the registration formalities to assess the exact time that he/she will get for preparation.
  • When it comes to preparatory courses and study materials, an MCAT applicant should emphasize on those courses that allow them to sharpen their skills and maximize their potential by taking practice tests. The proctored tests are important and help the applicants to understand the level of preparation and how close they are towards achieving a good score.
  • It is also necessary to explore the weaknesses in each section of the test and the MCAT applicants should begin by exploring the test sections in detail. This is particularly applicable for those applicants who are planning to take this test for the second time.
  • The study hours should be divided conveniently, for example, a weekly study plan should be prepared to track the progress as far as preparation is concerned.
  • The applicants should stay away from outdated study materials and preparatory courses and choose those that suit their studying methods. For instance, those students who are comfortable with personalized feedbacks should resort to private tutoring options.
  • Lastly, on the day of the exam, the test takers should read the questions thoroughly before answering because looking at the questions at first can distract their attention and spoil their efforts of getting a good score.

Each applicant should begin with their preparation in such a manner so that they are able to achieve the desired score in the first attempt and fulfil their goals of studying medicine by getting a good score in MCAT.
