Significance of LSAT for Law School Admission

LSAT

LSAT, Law School Admission Test, is an integral part of law school admissions. The LSAT is administered by LSAC. A lot of students apply for law schools every year. To assess the students a common test is essential. LSAT is the common test that is administered for students who wish to pursue law in their graduation. Any student wishing to study law has to take up this test. A high score in the LSAT will pave way for admission in a reputed law school.

LSAT is part of the application process to get into a law school that is a member of the American Bar Association. LSAC, Law School Admission Council, is committed to ease the admission process for entering into law schools. LSAC administers the LSAT test in this regard.

GPA & LSAT

Students from different universities across the globe apply for law schools in the US and Canada. The undergraduate scores will not place all the students on a level platform. The scoring pattern of each university is different. Even within the same university, different subjects are scored differently. To place all the students who apply for the law school admission on a level platform LSAT is administered. The academic abilities of students from varied backgrounds can be compared using the LSAT admission scores for which GPA cannot be used. LSAT offers the level platform on which students can be graded. So LSAT score is very important for the admission into law schools.

What LSAT Tests

The LSAT does not test the knowledge of the individual. Students from varied academic background pursue law, so their knowledge cannot be tested. In LSAT, acquired skills like logical reasoning, reading comprehension and analytical ability are tested. These skills are considered essential for success in law school.

LSAT Admission scores

LSAT scores are graded form 120-180. The average marks scored is at 150. Most students get scores between 145 and 160. LSAT admission score greater than 160 will help a student get admission into one of the Top 20 law schools. Only with a 166+ score, admission into one of the Top 10 colleges is possible. 150 is a very important number. It is an indicator to show whether a person will be admitted into any law school or not. A score less than 150 means the chances of admission into a law school are bleak.

The LSAT score alone is not considered for the admission into law schools. The undergraduate GPA, the student's credentials, recommendations are also considered for admission. The maximum weightage is given to the LSAT score. Each law school has different ways of weighing the LSAT score and the GPA. A high LSAT admission score will help one get into a reputed law school but the GPA and other credentials should also be good.

LSAT test score is not a perfect predictor of how a student will perform in law school. This is so because more than the skill level and understanding of the concepts tested in the test, other factors like mental, physical health also play a role in the final score. But this test is the best way to evaluate students. For those who feel that they have performed below their potential due to these other factors, LSAC allows them to cancel their LSAT admission score. But this has to be done immediately after the test, before the scores are announced.

The LSAT can be taken more than once but most law schools average the LSAT admission scores for their evaluation. It is best to work hard and give the best in the first LSAT test itself.
