IELTS Test Details for USA Applicants

International English Language Testing System or the IELTS is a standardized test. This test score is accepted by over 3000 institutions and programs, as an English language skills testing exam, in the USA. This test is taken by students who want to pursue an international education (Academic version) or by those who want to immigrate or take up professional work (The General Training version). The tests are conducted on Saturdays or Thursdays for convenience.

IELTS Test Centers and Dates

It is administered in 800 test locations across 130 countries. 52 centers across the USA offer IELTS USA. The test is administered on 48 fixed dates in a year for the academic version and on 24 dates for the general training version.





IELTS Registration

This registration can be done in person, by mail or online. You can register by identifying 2 test centers that are best suited for you. Take a print out of the test application form and sign it and read it thoroughly. Signing the application form shows that you have read and understood the rules and regulations of the test and that you would abide by them. Two passport size photos are required that are not older than 6 months. The photograph should be taken without spectacles. A photocopy of your passport or a national identity card (some centers accept this), must be carried by you to the test center along with the application form. This application form along with the photocopy of the passport and registration fee can be submitted at the test center. The registration fee is $185. You have to contact your center if you are planning to send these documents by mail.

For Online Application

For online application, you need to first select a test center. This website gives you the list of 52 test centers in the USA http://www.ielts.org//test_centre_search/search_results.aspx?TestCentreSearchSubRegion=4a489b2a-083a-45de-a65e-6514bc133cb4.

Clicking on the "More Information" link next to the test center will give you the contact details (address, email and website) of the test center and the dates on which the test is administered at that center. The fee amount is also given here. Test dates shown in purple color indicate that the date may not be available. You can contact the test center directly to find out if seats are available or register for the next available date suitable for you.

You have to click on the ieltsregistration.org link to complete your registration process. Filling up the details in this page and clicking on "Search" will take you to the next page showing the details of the test center and the different payment options available for that center. To continue to register, click on the "Apply Online" button.

In this page all your personal details and other academic details have to be filled. A confirmation mail will be sent to you with the test center details.

Paper Registration

If there are any technical difficulties in applying online you can apply by paper. For this paper registration you have to send a completed application form, fee for the test, passport-sized photo and passport picture page photocopy. All these documents should be received by the test center at least 2 weeks before the test date you have applied for.

The above 4 are the basic requirements for taking up the test. For the online application, the photo can be uploaded else can be sent to the test center by mail or as an attachment to an email along with the passport photocopy and fee payment. These documents should arrive at the test center at least 4 working days before the test date.

Try to register as early as possible. The center offers seats for test on a first-come first-served policy. So, if you want a test center of your choice register early. The seat is confirmed only after the fee payment is received.
