4. IELTS Test Sections:

The IELTS test is divided into four sections i.e. reading, listening, writing and speaking.





  1. Reading Section:
  2. The reading section is of about one hour duration and is divided into three sections containing 40 questions in total. Generally the question types are related to multiple-choice questions, fill in the blanks, summary completion, match the headings and yes/ no / not given.

    The reading extract is generally picked up from books, newspapers or journals. No sort of special knowledge or preparation is required for the test. The reading passages for the academic and general training module are different.

  3. Writing Section:
  4. The listening section is of 60 minutes and is made up of two tasks. Writing task 1 for academic module consists of graphs, charts and diagrams etc. the candidate has to summarize the main points and write down the information in 150 words. The writing task one for the academic and general training modules is different. The writing task two is the same for both. The candidate will be asked to write his viewpoints on a particular topic in 250 words.

  5. Speaking Section:
  6. The speaking section for both the modules is the same. It is divided into three sections. The first section is the general introduction round. The next is the cue card round and the last is the follow up question round. The speaking section is usually of 30 minutes.

  7. Listening Section:
  8. The listening section is the same for the academic and the general training modules. It is divided into four sections and has 40 questions in total. The listening section is of 30 minutes and 10 minutes extra are given after the listening section is over to copy down the answers on the answer sheet.

    The  dates selected should be such that you get sufficient time to prepare for each of the above mentioned sections. Estimate your abilities related with each section and choose the dates accordingly.

  9. IELTS Exam Dates Scores:
  10. The exam  scores are allotted in bands. The band scores vary from 1 to 9. If the candidate gets band 1, it means that he is the beginner of the language; whereas band 9 means that he is an expert with the language. The scores are sent to the candidate within two weeks from the date on which the candidate appears for the test.

  11. IELTS Exam Dates:
  12. On the exam day the candidate must carry along with him all the required documents. He should make sure that he carries his passport and acknowledgement card to the test venue. He should make it a point to reach the exam venue at least one hour before the test starts, as it will take some time to check his identification documents. He should not forget to carry with him at least 3 to 4 pencils, sharpener and an eraser, as all the four sections have to be attempted with the help of pencils.

    He should not take along with him his personal belongings such as cash or other valuables, as he will not be permitted to carry all this inside the test center. If the candidate will arrive late for the test, then he will not be allowed to sit for the test.
