IELTS Score Calculation Explained
IELTS Score:
The test takers of IELTS receive a score band between the ranges of 1 to 9 as their IELTS scores. Each score range exhibits the quality of English language usage of the test taker. Band score of 1 exhibits zero usage while a band score of 9 shows expert usage. This band score is calculated based on the number of correct and incorrect answers you provide in IELTS. The results of IELTS take some weeks to arrive. However, in case you want to know your approximate IELTS score, you can use the IELTS score calculator. An IELTS score calculator feeds in your correctly answered IELTS questions and gives you an estimated IELTS band score. The IELTS score calculator is found in many online websites. However, first you have to know the process of working of the IELTS score calculator.
Using the IELTS Score Calculator:
Before you begin searching for your approximate IELTS score by using the IELTS score calculator, let us discuss how IELTS scoring works. The IELTS markers test your proficiency in the four sections (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) and assign you individual scores. These individual scores or the raw scores are rounded off to provide you a total band score. Assuming that you score 4.5 in Reading, 7 in Listening, 7.5 in Speaking and 7 in Writing, you get a raw score of 26 and a band score of (26/4=6.5).
The IELTS score calculator computes your IELTS band score by taking the mean of the total raw score you achieve in each of the four sections of the IELTS. Hence, a band score of 1-9 is assigned to you to demonstrate your ability to use the English language in practice.

The Interpretation of Band Scores:
Each band score that the IELTS score calculator estimates, equals to a certain amount of raw score in each of the four sections of IELTS. Each band score demonstrates certain aspects of the test takers' English language usage. Let us read about each band score in the following:
- A band score of 1 shows that the test taker hardly knows any English word and dwells in some limited vocabulary. He is a non-user of English language.
- A band score of 2 depicts that the test taker is only equipped to initiate basic conversations and lacks prolonged communication skills. He is a sporadic user.
- A band score of 3 establishes the test taker as a optimally limited user as he can only handle familiar and similar situations while communicating in English.
- A band score of 4 makes the test taker a limited user of English and points out his circumstantial usage ability. He is not able to initiate intricate conversation.
- A band score of 5 expresses the users' capability to start a conversation and complete it without glitches. However, he can make mistakes which make him a modest user.
- A band score of 6 indicates the users' partial command on the language and ability to understand complex conversation. However, it doesn't rule out his possibility to be inaccurate and misinterpret communication. He can be classified as a competent user.
- A band score of 7 and 8 represents good and very good user respectively. Test takers with band score of 7 shows superior ability to handle conversations and complex arguments with some amount of inaccuracy and occasional mistakes. The test takers with a band score of 8 have the same skills with least amount of inaccuracy as an add-on.
- Finally, the highest band score of 9 designates you to be an expert user as you are fully loaded with vocabulary, conversation skills and fluency in usage.
The IELTS score band is the indicator of your efficiency in English language. Different institutions and organizations look into your IELTS score band before granting you admission or jobs. Hence, having a higher score band is recommended in IELTS. If you work and prepare well for IELTS, you can definitely score well.
