IELTS Exam Dates

How to Select the Best IELTS Exam Dates

IELTS is a globally recognised standardized test for English language proficiency. There are two modules of this test- Academic module and General Training module. While the Academic module of the test is taken by professionals like doctors and students who want to pursue higher education in English speaking countries, the General Training module is for immigration purposes or for those who want to gain work experience. If you are not sure which module to take, you can contact the organisation or institution, to which you have applied. The IELTS exam dates for both these modules can be on the same day or on different days; hence, you should be clear of your choice of module when you fill the IELTS application form to avoid confusion.

When to Take IELTS Exam?

IELTS exam dates are available on 48 fixed dates and are administered four times in a month depending on local demand. Although IELTS test centres are available in more than 800 locations all over the world, not all the test centres offer IELTS tests, on all the IELTS exam dates. You will have to check with your selected test centre for upcoming IELTS exam dates.

How Long is the IELTS Exam?

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests of the IELTS exam are completed on the same day without any breaks. The Speaking test of IELTS is a face-to-face interview by a certified examiner; and may be conducted either 7 days before or 7 days after the test. In case you are not able to attend the test on the given date due to unforeseen circumstances, then the test centre may give you the next available test date.

Validity of IELTS Scores:

The IELTS scores are valid for two years and the institutions not only consider the individual band score for each section, but also consider the overall band score. Your result will be sent by post after 13 days from the test date. While there is no pass or fail for the IELTS exam, individual institutions and faculties set their own benchmark for IELTS scores according to the specific language needs of their course, study or work program. For instance, for a linguistically demanding academic course like medicine or law a band score of 7.5-9 is required, but for a linguistically less demanding course like Computer or Pure Mathematics a band score of 7.0 is acceptable.

When you select the appropriate test date, register as early as possible, preferably at least 6 to 8 weeks before the application deadline.
