When to Take the IELTS

IELTS scores are valid for only two years; hence, you should choose your exam dates wisely. Most of the students begin their preparation for the test right from their high school years and plunge into taking the exam. This route is advisable only if you have solved ample number of practice papers, mock tests, etc., and have raised your score band in these tests, considerably. If you are planning to take the test immediately after your high school, March/April should be a good time to take the test. Choose test dates well in advance before you plunge into registration.

If you are going to take time off to prepare for the exam after your high school, October/November will be an ideal time for you to take the test. This is because; to take the test in October/November you will need to begin preparing for the test by August. Once you are thorough, you will have time to register for the exam by September. Most colleges begin their admissions by March. The October/November test dates should have you well prepared for college, since by then you should have received your scores too.

Note that some colleges do wait for your test scores if the results are awaited; in this case you need to submit a proof that you have taken the exam. However, most colleges do not show such leniency, hence, it is better to plan ahead when it comes to taking the test, or your admission process can be considerably delayed.

Those who have enrolled in preparation classes can consult with their counselors to advise them about the right time to take the test. Due to their rich experience in the field they will be in a good position to give you the right information with regards to the dates. In any case, it is advisable to be prepared completely before you face the test, especially if you are taking it for the first time.

It is better to register and choose the dates for taking the test as soon as possible. This is to avoid unprecedented delays in registration processes, especially because taking the test has been made mandatory by almost all centers of higher education around the world. To plan ahead and avoid delay is the only way to ensure quick and sure admission into college.
