Different Registration Methods for GRE
In order to take the GRE, register for the test and take the test on the allotted day. There are many different ways in which you can register for the GRE. The methods that you are permitted to use, depend upon the test location and the version of the test that you select. For the GRE, register by any of the following methods:
1. Online Registration:
You can register online for the GRE for both the computer-based and the paper-based versions of the test. Online registration is not available for everyone who wants to take the GRE. You can check at the link given below to see if you are eligible or not. To register online you must first create an account. The link you can use to create an account and register online is: https://mygre.ets.org/greweb/login/login.jsp?WT.ac=gre_revised_r_btn.
2. Registration By Phone:
In order to take the GRE, register in the USA, by calling on either of these numbers: 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-473-2255. To take the GRE outside the USA, you need to call the Regional Registration Center (RRC) that is allotted to your preferred test location. You can get the number of the RRC from the official website. If you want to take the paper-based test you cannot register by phone.
3. Registration By Mail:
To take the GRE, register by mail by downloading the form from the website. You need to fill the form and send the required payment. You will receive a voucher within three weeks, approximately. The voucher will contain an expiry date, before which you have to call and schedule your appointment.
4. Registration by Fax:
You can register for the GRE by fax if you are going to take the test outside the USA. You have to download the appropriate form from the website, fill in the required details and fax it to the number of the RRC that is given. Registration by fax is not available for test centers in the USA or for the paper-based GRE.
Important Points to Keep in Mind While Registering for the GRE:
In order to register for the GRE, you need to find out which test center is most convenient for you, and on which date you would like to take the test. You also need to decide which version of the test you would like to take. The website gives the list of test centers and tells which version is available at which center. You can use the following link to get this information: http://www.ets.org/bin/getprogram.cgi?test=gre.
You should be careful about the identification that you plan to use on the day of the test. If you are in any doubt about whether it will be accepted or not, it is better to contact ETS and confirm it. Another thing to remember is about your name. The name that you give at the time of registration (by any method), must be the same as the one that appears in the form of identification that you plan to use on the day of the test. If there is any discrepancy, you may not be allowed to take the test. Even what may seem like minor discrepancy to you, such as a space between the first name and the last name, may create a problem for you later.
You should also check the accepted forms of payment, just before you register. This is because ETS may make alterations to its list of accepted payment modes at any time. If you check the payment modes much before you actually register, it may be troublesome for you to arrange another mode of payment.
You are permitted to make a change in your test schedule up to three days prior to your original test date. You have to pay a fee for this. The amount varies depending on the situation. You may not, however, exchange registration fees that you have paid for a computer-based test, for the paper-based version, or vice versa.
In order to take the GRE, register properly for the test so that there is no difficulty later on. If you are careful to follow the instructions, you should be able to register successfully for the GRE.
