When Can You Take the GRE?

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a test that is taken up by students who want to pursue higher studies in the US, Canada and a few other countries. The GRE score is one of the basic requirements for joining a graduation course in the above mentioned countries. More than 8 lakh students take up the test every year. The dates to take up the computer-based test are available throughout the year. The paper based test is available 3 times in a year. Appointments for the dates for the test are based on a first-come first-served basis. The test can be taken up only once every 60 days with a maximum of 5 times in a rolling 12 month period.





This test is administered at around 700 test centers across 160+ countries. Before you register for the test, check the type of test (computer-based or paper-based) available at the center closest to you.

Registration

Since the test dates are filled on a first-come first-served basis, it is better to register early for the test. Maximum number of students take up the test between September and December. You can locate the center closest to you at http://etsis4.ets.org/tcenter/ and register for the test for the chosen date.

You can register online through your GRE account. For people with special requirements online registration is not available. The fee for the test can be paid by credit or debit card. The fee varies between $160 and $190. The fee varies between different places. Fee waiver for deserving students is given by Educational Testing Services (ETS), the body that conducts the test.

Results

The results will be mailed to you within 10 to 15 days after the test. It will also be mailed to the recipients you have chosen. You can also view your results online by logging into My GRE account.

Points to Consider Before Selecting a Test Date

Before you select a date for your test, you have to consider a lot of factors. These factors will help you decide the perfect test date.

Time for Applying

Your results will be available within 10 or 15 days. Check if the time will be enough to apply to the various universities. If you think time may not be enough try to take up the test earlier

Time for Preparation

Thorough preparation is necessary to get a high score in the test. Decide on the way you want to prepare for the test. Select a date such that you will have enough time for preparation especially if you plan to take up a course.

Date Availability

Since all centers are not open on all days, check if your test center is open on the day you would like to take up the test. If the center is open, check if the date is available. It is advised to register early to be sure of the availability of the test date. The registration cannot be transferred to another person and cancellation and rescheduling charges are applicable. It is best if you decide on a date and then register. After registering for the test, start preparing sincerely and get a high score. Make sure that the name on the admit card for the test and the identity card that you will carry have the same name. Be very careful while registering over phone.
