Is GRE an Expensive Test to Take?

The GRE test is the stepping stone to a chance at higher education in a good university in the US, Canada and a few other countries. The first information students, who want to take up the test, like to know is the cost for GRE. The cost of the GRE test is not very low. At the same time it is not very high as well. It is low compared to other similar tests.

Registration Charges

The cost for the test, if you are from the US, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico is $160. If you are from any other location the fee for registration is $190.





Special Charges

If you miss the registration deadline and still want to take up the test on a particular day, you can do so by paying a late registration fee of $25. There is an option called Standby testing. This can be used by you, if you miss both the registration deadline and the late registration deadline. For this a fee of $50 is charged. You can register in the standby testing mode. If any candidate cancels the registration, then you will be allowed to sit for the test. Your seat for the test is not confirmed and you will be allowed to take up the test only if someone cancels.

If you have registered for the test on a particular day but you will not be able to take up the test, then you can reschedule the test for another day. The cost for rescheduling is $50.

You can also change your test center after registering for the test. For this, you have to pay a fee of $50.

Scoring Services Charges

After 10-15 days of the test, your scores will be mailed to you. You can also access your scores online by creating an account at My GRE. You can receive your scores by other means as well. For getting your scores by phone, you have to pay a fee of $12.

When you register for the test, you can list 4 institutions to which you want your score report to be sent. If you want extra score reports, you can get them by paying $23 each.

For the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, you can avail the Question and Answer review service. The charge for this service is $50. You can get the score review for the Analytical Writing measure by paying $55. If you want the paper-based test's multiple-choice questions to be hand scored, you can pay $30 and get the service. $30 is charged as a score reinstatement fee.

GRE Fee Reduction

The ETS believes that the inability to pay the cost for GRE should not stop a student from taking up the test. To aid such students ETS offers financial support. To receive this support, you must be a US citizen or a resident alien. You must either be a college senior or an enrolled college graduate. The 50% reduction is offered to eligible candidates. This is offered on a first-come first-served basis. This discount can be availed only once.

Fee Payment Options

For the computer based GRE test, Credit or Debit cards are accepted. The cards can be American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa. Money Order, Certified Check or Voucher is also accepted.

For the paper based test, along with the above mentioned payment options PayPal, E-Check Service, UNESCO Coupons and Western Union Quick Pay are also accepted. Payments can be made in US dollars, British pound, Canadian dollar, Euro or Japanese yen. If the payment is made in a currency other than US dollar, the payable amount should be Telegraphic Transfer Selling exchange rate of the US dollar.
