The GMAT consists of three sections – verbal section, quantitative section and analytical writing assessment section. The verbal and quantitative sections consist of multiple choice questions and each question carries a different score depending on its level of difficulty. The verbal section contains multiple choice questions on critical reasoning, sentence correction and reading comprehension. The score in the verbal section ranges from 0 - 60 points. The quantitative section contains multiple choice questions on problem solving and data sufficiency. The score in the quantitative section ranges from 0 – 60 points. The analytical writing assessment consists of two essays and is scored between 0 - 6 points.
A candidate who has taken the GMAT will receive four GMAT test scores as follows:
Of these, the Overall score, the combination of the Quantitative and Verbal scores scaled from 200 to 800, is the primary score used for assessing an application by a business school. The writing assessment score is a separate score and is comparatively less important than the Overall score.
GMAT test is a computer adaptive test that adjusts to your skills as you take it. The test is comprised of questions of different levels of difficulty with the harder questions carrying more points. If you answer a question correctly, the next question comes from a pool of questions of increased difficulty. In case you answer a question incorrectly, the next question is an easier one. Thus, the computer chooses questions according to your level of skill. There is no option to go back to a question or skip a question without answering it.
Scoring high in GMAT requires meticulous preparation and attention to details in addition to applying certain proven techniques and strategies effective in achieving high GMAT test scores.
The GMAT is available as a computer adaptive test. As the harder questions carry more points, answering a few harder questions fetch more points than answering more of the easier ones. If you answer correctly, the next question is chosen by the computer from a pool of harder questions. Therefore, in order to achieve high GMAT test scores, it is imperative for the candidate to answer more of the difficult questions as giving correct answers consistently is the key to the desired result.
The GMAT tests your ability to focus and manage time in addition to your verbal and analytical skills. Since time is a major constraint in the GMAT, it is important to learn to pace yourself. Spending too much time on a question can cost you dearly, plus, there is a severe penalty if all the questions are not answered.
As it is mandatory to answer all the questions whether you know the answer or not, there is not much option left other than guessing for the correct answer. There are certain techniques, such as, eliminating the wrong answers first, that help to make a correct guess.
Without practice none of the tips or tricks can help you to achieve high GMAT test scores. The key to the success of scoring high in GMAT is meticulous preparation and practice. As there is no syllabus for GMAT, it is useful to take as many practice tests and old tests as possible. It is important not to feel stressed at the time of taking the GMAT as it will diminish your mental ability to perform. Good preparation helps to boost your confidence and achieve high GMAT test scores.
