How to Assess GMAT Preparation Courses
Whoever is serious about GMAT preparation will definitely want to attend a proper GMAT course/program. If you have done your research properly you will be aware of the myriads of GMAT preparation courses available in the market. Sometimes the choice can be really confusing because most of them offer similar GMAT preparation courses. The question is how do you take your decision on which one to join?
The answer to that question isn’t quite simple. There are a few aspects that you should have with you on the basis of which, you can make a choice. These are presented below, so be sure to analyze all of those GMAT preparation courses that you have found on these parameters before you take your decision-
- What do you want?
This is the most important thing for you before you make your decision. Be sure if you want to prepare for GMAT seriously or just because you would like to try the exam. If you are serious then you will have the names of universities that you want to apply to, in your mind. Go to their site and find out how much score you need to stand a good chance of being accepted. Once you know this you can decide on how you want to prepare to achieve that score. Some of you may even want to prepare on your own, without taking any course. Once you have decided that you definitely need a course, you can proceed further to do your research on various GMAT preparation courses available.
- Self assessment
To do this you have to take a sample test available at http://www.mba.com/the-gmat.aspx or on any other GMAT preparation site. Analyze this test fairly and critically to find out your strength and weakness. If you find that you are about average, you should take up a long comprehensive program and if you are already very good you can do with a short term crash course or an online course that doesn’t consume much of your time.
- Timing restraints
Everyone will have their own schedule to keep. So 1st decide on the time that you will be able to give to these GMAT preparation courses. You should be able to devote a regular amount of time to the course; otherwise, it is of no use. After you know your own time restraints and decide on what time to allot to the program, you can look up various courses that suit your timing.
- Quality of tutoring
Many institutes that facilitate these GMAT preparation courses boast about the quality of the tutors on offer. But the fact is, it is not always true. You can judge this aspect only by taking genuine feedback from either previous students or from various forums available online. This is the most important parameter on which you should judge any course. Some of you may think that the tutor isn’t so important as long as the quality of materials is good, but quality of the material is totally secondary when compared to the quality of the tutor. Something that you should know about GMAT is that, the preparation is not intuitive and standard. This means that, it will not suffice if you practice from materials and the internet. There are several tips and strategies involved in the test which only an experienced tutor can give you. This will make a great difference in your final score. So you will be much better off doing some research on the quality of tutors in a particular institute before joining.
- Previous results
An analysis of the previous results that the institute has produced will give you a lot of knowledge about its ability. The inability of any institute to produce good results immediately reflects that the GMAT preparation courses offered by it are not up to the mark. However this parameter can be sidelined if the institute you are judging is relatively new. In that case you have to make your decision on trust in its representatives.
- Courses on offer
Any institute that offers GMAT preparation courses will offer them with various options like online tutoring, online live, in classroom, private tutoring, correspondence etc. If you are particularly interested in one program, then you can filter several of the institutes based on the availability of that program. Remember that here also you should look for the quality more than anything else.
- Online feedback
It is advisable that you become a member of a GMAT forum or chat room. The discussions and notes that you will be exposed to there will give you a lot of insight into the programs that various institutes offer. You will come across a lot of subtle details that you won’t find anywhere else. You can clarify your doubts and fears there from students who have taken the test previously. Since these are independent forums, you don’t have to be worried that it will be biased in favor of one particular institute.
- Cost efficiency
When you visit the website of individual institutes you will also become familiar with their pricing. Although most of the institutes charge almost the same, there may be big differences depending on the course that you choose viz. online/tutor/classroom etc. This parameter however should be your last filter and by no means should you compromise on a good institute just because of the cost. You may think that you are saving money, but after the test you will realize the importance of a good program, even if the investment was a little higher. It makes all the difference between a good score and a great score.
These parameters are sufficient but not necessary to judge GMAT preparation courses. It will be your decision to take them under consideration as and when required. All the best!!
