Introduction to GED

This test is administered by the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education (ACE) with the assistance of each jurisdiction or state where the tests are carried out. It is monitored and accredited by the American Council on Education. Contrary to widespread belief, the actual test cannot be taken online. There are more than 3000 official testing centers throughout the US and Canada and they are generally located in adult education centers, colleges or schools. Students who want to take the test can select a suitable testing center from various centers present in their state.

This test evaluates whether or not you possess skills and knowledge comparable to a high school degree. This is an accepted high school diploma for those adults who had to leave high school before graduating. A number of employers, colleges and training schools accept this as an equivalent of a high school diploma.

GED Content and Scoring

Academic skills and knowledge associated with high school studies are tested in this test. The entire examination consists of tests based on the following subject areas: Language Arts (Reading), Language Arts (Writing), Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. A majority of the questions are provided in a multiple choice format. You will be required to write an essay in the Language Arts writing test. You will have to carry out some calculations for answering the questions in the Mathematics test.

Scores for each subject test ranges from 200 to 800. In order to pass a test and earn the credential, you should achieve an average score, of the five individual subject areas of 450 or greater. Also, the score in each individual subject must be 410 or greater. The passing standard laid down may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but most U.S jurisdictions use the above mentioned passing standard.

GED Preparation

Over a million adults take the test annually. If you have been out of touch with your high school studies, you will have to prepare well for the tests. It is very important to include practice tests in your preparation. There are a number of websites through which you can take free practice tests. You have to answer all questions of the individual subject tests within a stipulated time period. Taking these mock tests will help you to get accustomed to the time constraints and the sequence of questions in the actual tests.

Before enrolling for a course, taking a sample test will help you assess yourself and identify your weak areas so that you can work upon improving them. Some have a computerized program that gives you the explanations for the wrong answers as well as the correct answers after the completion of the test. Attempting practice tests should become a part of your learning process. This will help you analyze the wrong answers and pinpoint your weak areas. You can now concentrate on improving your weak subject areas to attain the scores required for passing and getting the diploma. After you have reviewed the content required to improve your weak areas, you can go in for another test. Your performance in the latest test that you take for practice will help you gauge yourself as to whether you have succeeded in improving your weak subject areas or not. Since there is no cost involved in taking the test you can take it many times. You should try and attempt as many such mock examinations as possible to familiarize yourself  with the nature of the examination.

After taking a couple of tests, if you find that you are not able to make any noteworthy improvements, then you should enroll in a preparatory course. You will find a number of online courses available on the internet. These sites contain test questions in all the five subject areas, similar to the actual ones asked in the original examination. Most online courses mock tests, which consequently will help prepare you adequately.

If you don't want to enroll for an online course, you can take the decision of attending classes. There are various institutes that will help you in your preparation. The facility of individual tutoring is also available in certain areas. Most students prefer to prepare for the tests by carrying out self study and taking tests from time to time. Preparation guides and study materials are easily available at local bookstores and public libraries. Most of the guides contain tests for practice, test-taking tips, and guidelines to help students assess themselves and identify areas for improvement.
