The Reading Placement Test of COMPASS
How do Colleges Use COMPASS Reading Test Scores
What is COMPASS Reading Test?
This is one of the three sections in the test. Like its other two sections (Maths & Writing), you will need to sit in front of the computer and work on the questions. Since this is an untimed exam, you do not have to worry about the time limit. You can take your time and answer the questions at a pace that you are most comfortable in. Generally, the test taker can complete this section in about 15-90 minutes, depending on how fast he is. There are five types of reading passages that will be included in this section of the test and these are:
- Natural Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Prose Fiction
- Practical Reading
It is important for you to know that all the questions that you will find here will be in the form of multiple choice questions. You will find that there are five answer options for each question from where you need to choose an answer that you feel is correct. To ensure that you are selecting the right answer, it is recommended that you read the passages properly and understand them well. It is also important that you understand what is being asked so that you will be choosing the right answers.
To register for the exam, you will need to get in touch with the advisor or counsellor of the college that you wish to enrol in. This person will fix you up for the test and then you just have to start preparing for the test as early as possible so that you will be able to get a high score.
Usage of the Scores of the COMPASS Reading Test
The scores from this test are used for various purposes. Given below is how the scores of the Reading section are used:
- Used for the purpose of admission in college: If you are planning to join an entry level course in a college, it is important that you have the skills that are required to succeed in this program. The test will determine whether you have the relevant skills or not and on the basis of the score that you have obtained, the college will decide whether they should give you admission or not. Do keep in mind that the institution that you are thinking of enrolling in will have a cut-off score and if you score less than this, you may not be granted admission. So you need to try and get a score as high as possible.
- Used by the college to select the right students: The result of the reading placement test will be used by the college to determine whether you have the skills to find success in the program that you wish to pursue. If the score you have obtained is low, then the institution may reject your application because accepting an unsuitable student will lead to the wastage of college resources.
- Assessment of skills of the student: This exam will assess the skills of the student and the result will determine whether or not a particular course will be beneficial for him to pursue. If he lacks the skills then he can consider another course or he can consider pursuing a prep class to prepare him for the course.
- Enrolment in entry-level courses: The scores of this test section will determine whether you have the reading skills required to join the various courses in the college or university or if you are required to undertake a reading course first. For instance, if you are planning to enrol for a ‘Business Administration’ course in Gainesville State College you will need to score at least 78 in the reading test for this is the cut-off score.
Importance of the COMPASS Reading Placement Test
The Reading section is important because it can help the students as well as the college. If the score obtained by the student is high then it will increase his chances of getting admission for a course that he has in mind. It will measure the skills of the candidate and point out the weak areas as well as the strong areas of the test taker. As a result, he will be able to take necessary actions to improve in the areas in which he is not good. It will also help the college to place the right candidate in the right course.
