5 Features of COMPASS Math Test

COMPASS is an assessment test for new students who are to enter college for helping them choose apt courses for pursuing their academics or consider their placement in suitable fields of education. The basic purpose of this test is to evaluate the skills of students in the following areas:

Overview of Mathematics Test in COMPASS

The Math test comprises of two sections:

  • Math Placement Test: This test constitutes five different subjects including Pre Algebra, Algebra, College Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Math Diagnostic Test: In this, there are 15 subsections of two major areas of Mathematics:

    1. Pre Algebra: which combines Integers, Decimals, Exponents, Square roots and Scientific notation, Fractions, Percentages and Averages ( medians, modes and means). There are seven questions in this section.
    2. Algebra: which consists of Exponents and Radicals, Factoring polynomials, Basic Operations/Polynomials, Linear Equations/ One Variable, Linear Equations/Two Variables, Rational Expressions, Substituting Values and Setting Equations. There are eight questions in this section.

The candidates taking the diagnostic and placement tests are allowed to make use of calculators, whether manual or online.

Five Aspects of Mathematics Test in COMPASS

  • A test taker will have the opportunity to proceed to the intermediate or higher levels of Algebra only when the questions of Algebra at the lower level are answered correctly.

When it comes to the duration of the Math test, it must be said that it is an examination that is not framed by time limits. However, a majority of students are able to complete the test within a period of two hours.
