The Importance of The ESL Test Under COMPASS

Significance of COMPASS ESL Test

The test is one of the major assessment tools that used by colleges for measuring the competence of the students in order to help them choose the right courses for pursuing their college education. However, the system of assessing the skills of the students through this test is different because it does not declare passing scores for the students; rather the scores describe their abilities to choose the entry-level courses in the college.

The sections of ESL Test

The test assesses the proficiency of English of the non-native speakers and divided into the following categories:

  • ESL Listening: In this section, students' ability of understanding Standard American English is measured through recognition of pictures and words in the initial level and exploring higher level of academics at the later stage. In short, it is a test in which the easy items are asked in the beginning gradually moving on to increased levels of difficulty. The motive of the test is to measure the level of skills with respect to vocabulary, diction, rate of speech, the use of idioms and metaphors. During an active moment of this section of the test, the students are allowed to prepare notes while listening to the speech.
  • ESL Reading: The Reading component assesses the competence of reading and understanding the questions that are asked in Standard American English. There are two categories of the test that include: Referring and Reasoning. While the first category of the test involves reading of materials that are apparently inferred by the candidates, the second category of the test is related to reasoning. The content of the test includes materials that are to be read by the students and either short or long. In the initial level of the test, the reading passages may have been taken from a genuine source with little changes. Besides this, the test takers are asked to evaluate pictures, maps, graphs, photos, charts and tables.
  • ESL Grammar Usage: As the name implies, the Grammar section measures the aptitude of the students in two broad areas: Sentence Elements and Sentence Structure and Syntax. The questions on Sentence Elements include verbs, punctuation, words with functions, subject and object, modifiers and formation of words. On the other hand, the questions on Sentence Structure include the relation of grammar and communication, word order, and the relationships that exist between clauses and agreement. Besides this, the questions are also based on a format in which the students have to fill in the blanks from the options that are provided to them or a reading passage. Under this format, the test takers have to answer multiple-choice questions and select the correct response from the options that are available.
  • ESL e-Write: The Placement section evaluates the analytic scores in the following areas: Development, Focus, Organization, Use of Language and Mechanics.

Importance of ESL Test

The ESL test is approved by the Department of Education in the United States and far as the significance of this test is concerned, it allows the institutions to find out whether a student is able to comprehend the reading and writing tasks in Standard American English or not.

This is essential because the institutions in the United States follow this level of English for all the courses whether in Mathematics or English. Therefore, the scores of this test are important for non-native speakers who are not proficient in the language like their American counterparts. In short, the students appearing for this test are placed in suitable ESL courses on the basis of their scores that are obtained in the test. Since these tests are counted in the approved list of ATB tests, obtaining the required scores help the students to embark on a new area of success with respect to college education.
