I strongly agree with Mark Twain's quote that today's schooling differs from actual education. Learning is a continuous process which never ceases. Moreover, the human mind has unlimited potential to understand and learn.However, the schooling pattern followed in general assumes that a student of a certain age is capable to grasp certain things.
According to Mark Twain, the schooling pattern is the institutionalized method of learning which we find in today's schools, colleges and universities. Education, however, is the overall outcome of experiential learning which would involve knowledge gained through practical application. Through his quote, it is clear that he believes that the outcome of practical learning is unparalleled and cannot be incorporated in the current traditional learning system.
Schooling is important in many ways and is definitely required for students. We cannot ignore that there are millions of concepts that are tried and tested which took our fore-fathers centuries to prove or disapprove. For example, it took many experiments and numerous researches to understand the facts concerning the Earth like its shape, its properties, the various elements available on the planet, its position in the universe etc. Now, each student cannot learn facts about our planet by experimenting; rather, they can affirm these actualities and utilize this knowledge to explore new things. However, our orthodox schoolingpattern has many limitations which restrict the learning process. However, classroom teaching assumes that all children would be able to learn the same content in a given time frame. The traditional school follows a syllabus is created based on the age of students without considering the learning potential they possess.
Not only does this limit students, but it creates numerous challenges for teachers as well. First, teachers have to adhere to the prospectus handed over by the university guidelines, making it impossible to leave room for students to explore of concepts. Second, teachers are forced to move on with topics after a certain timeframe mentioned for their assigned class, ignoring the fact that all students have different learning capabilities. This leads to certain students who are unable to perform well in class feeling inferior.
Alongside, it is a known fact that the human mind is exploratory in nature. It is this curiosity that makes the brain thirst for more information until the boundaries of human logic are satisfied. This happens to be the unique feature of our humanbrain that gives birth to creativity. Unfortunately today's schooling system limits such exploratory learning and fails to encourage creative and unparalleled thinking.
We cannot be oblivious to the fact that all systems are bound to change with time. Undoubtedly, it is impossible to provide complete experiential learning through old-fashioned schooling. However, there are ways where a clear balance can be maintained where we can encourage students to think out of the box along with facilitating education.
In conclusion, I would like to state that it is high time that we looked into the conventional pattern of our current schooling system and re-evaluate conservative teaching methods. The facilitation of experiential learning along with theoretical concepts would definitely improve the quality of education provided. Hence, we should strive in creating an education system which would impart knowledge and encourage out of the box thinking in students from young age in order to create a smarter and better generation.
