How to achieve ASVAB scores for military?

ASVAB or the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the qualification test to get enlisted in the U.S. Military Services. Many subtests together make this test. There are two versions of the test, while there are 10 subtests in the Computer Adaptive ASVAB (CAT-ASVAB) version, 9 of them are there in the Paper and Pencil ASVAB (P&P-ASVAB) version. The scores of this test are released in three different formats. These are:

  1. Standard Scores
  2. AFQT scores
  3. Composite Scores

Standard Scores

The individual scores of the different subtests after equating are called the standard scores. Equating is a process by which the difference in the scores arising due to the different modes of administration is nullified. These military ASVAB scores are relative to a national sample youth in the age group of 18 to 23. Generally, about 50% of the population scores above a standard score of 50 and about 16% scores 60 or above as the standard score.

AFQT Scores

The total score of four of the subtests is called the AFQT score. AFQT score stands for Armed Forces Qualifying Test score. The four subtests used for this calculation are Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC) and Word Knowledge (WK). These scores are reported in the percentile format and are categorized as shown below:

Percentile Score Range AFQT Category
I 93-99
II 65-92
IIIA 50-64
III B 31-49
IV A 21-30
IV B 16-20
IV C 10-15
V 1-9

The AFQT score is used for the enlistment procedure. Each wing of the U.S. Military Services has a minimum score which has to be scored by the candidate to join the service. This is called the enlistment eligibility. The enlistment eligibility scores of the various wings are:

  • Air Force- 40
