ASVAB Testing Online

Purpose of ASVAB Online Tests

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a standardized test that is administered to candidates who are keen to join or enlist in the United States Armed Forces. The ASVAB test serves as a filter to sift the best candidates for the required jobs in military services.

ASVAB Test Online Options

The ASVAB test has two formats:

  • Paper and Pencil based test, also known as P&P-ASVAB: The P&P-ASVAB is the traditional way of taking the test. The P&P-ASVAB is usually administered at Military Entrance Testing Sites (METS), where there is no provision for computerized testing.
  • Computerized test, also known as CAT-ASVAB: The CAT-ASVAB is conducted at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS). The CAT-ASVAB is a computerized test that is customized according to the answers you provide during the test.

Question Types

The questions in CAT-ASVAB testing online are of multiple-choice type. This means that you will be presented with a premise, a problem or a statement, depending on the subject being tested, which will be followed by the multiple choices. You will need to select the correct answer from the given options.

Sections of CAT-ASVAB

The CAT-ASVAB testing online has the same set of subjects as those in P&P-ASVAB. However, only one subject is segregated.

Note: Auto Information and Shop Information are treated as one subject in the P&P-ASVAB, whereas they are administered separately in the CAT-ASVAB.

The following is a list of subjects tested in the CAT-ASVAB testing online:

  • General Science (GS)
  • Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
  • Word Knowledge (WK)
  • Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
  • Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
  • Electronics Information (EI)
  • Auto Information (AI)
  • Shop Information (SI)
  • Mechanical Comprehension (MC)
  • Assembling Objects (AO)

The duration of the CAT-ASVAB testing online is different from that of the P&P-ASVAB. The CAT-ASVAB has a total of 145 questions that need to be answered in a time span of 154 minutes. The CAT-ASVAB is adaptive, which means that your test is tailored according to your abilities. The questions you receive depend on your ability to solve the previous question. Therefore, if you incorrectly responded to the previous question, your next question will be relatively easier. However, if your answer to the previous question is correct, the next question administered to you will be slightly more difficult than the previous question. As a result, the level of difficulty ranges from easy to medium, middle level, and medium difficulty to the harder level.

Advantages of Taking CAT-ASVAB

The CAT-ASVAB has gained popularity among students over the years. Due to the growth and awareness about technology and computers, students find it easy to appear for the CAT-ASVAB than for the P&P-ASVAB. The CAT-ASVAB is adaptive and customized according to the students' capability. This can, in fact, reduce the duration of the test because you can solve the problems at your own speed. Unlike P&P-ASVAB, you need not wait for other candidates to finish the computerized test in order to move on to the next section. You can proceed directly to the next section in CAT-ASVAB.

However, this does not mean that the CAT-ASVAB is easier than the P&P-ASVAB or vice versa; both are of an equal level. There are also a few disadvantages of the CAT-ASVAB. For example, you cannot go back to questions or your answers after you have answered the question because you can move to the next question only when you have completed it. As a result, you will not be able to correct your answer if you realize that you have not attempted the question correctly. Moreover, there is no scope to erase or modify your answer.
