  4. The importance of the Composite Scores
  5. The way to achieve high ASVAB scores

1. The Calculation of the Scores

In the CAT-ASVAB, the difficulty level of the questions depends on the capability of the examinee. So, each examinee answers a different set of questions. To nullify this, the individual scores of the subtests undergo a process called "equating". After this process, the scores obtained will be the same as the scores the examinee would have got if he had taken up the paper and pencil version of the test. On the other hand, in the P&P-ASVAB, all examinees come across the same set of questions. The scores of the different subtests are called the Standard scores. Of the 10 subtests, 4 subtests’ marks are used for the calculation of the Armed Forces Qualifying Test or the AFQT. These 4 subtests are Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. Different formulae are used on the different subtests' scores to arrive at the Composite Scores.

2. Importance of Standard Scores

The standard scores are the scores obtained after equating. These scores are relative to a national sample of applicants in the age group of 18-23. Generally, 50 is the score achieved by 50% of the test takers and 60 is the score achieved by 16% of the test takers.

3. The Importance of the AFQT Scores

The AFQT scores determine whether a person gets enlisted in the Army or not. Only if the candidate has scored 31, he/she will get enlisted in the U.S. Army. The AFQT scores are given in percentile. To get enlistment bonuses, one has to get a minimum score of 50.

AFQT Category Percentile Score Range
I 93-99
II 65-92
III A 50-64
IIIB 31-49
IV 10-30
V 1-9

4. The Importance of Composite Scores

The composite scores determine the jobs you will get within the Army. Each job in the Army requires the candidate to have special abilities and aptitude. The different composite scores help in identifying if the candidate possesses these special abilities. Composite scores are also called the 'Line Scores'.
Jobs in the army are called "Military Occupational Specialty" or the "MOS". The Army breaks down the ASVAB subtest scores into 10 different groups called the line scores. All the Army jobs fall within these ten groups.

The ten groups are,

  1. Clerical - CL
  2. Combat - CO
  3. Electronics - EL
  4. Field Artillery - FA
  5. General Maintenance - GM
  6. General Technical - GT
  7. Mechanical Maintenance - MM
  8. Operators and Food - OF
  9. Skilled Technical - ST
  10. Surveillance and Communications - SC

All the line scores are computed as a non-integer weighted linear combination of all subtests except the clerical line score. For this clerical line score, the Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension scores are used for calculation.
