## How Do Colleges Use Your ASSET Scores

The ASSET test is administered by the ACT. Its main purpose is to aid the students in placing them to appropriate college level post secondary courses. There are more than 400 colleges that make use of the scores for the college test of ASSET. The test basically judges three main skills in the test takers:

3. Mathematical Skills.

Additionally, there are options to take the advanced level test for Mathematics too. There are three such tests:

Each of these sections is for time duration of 25 minutes and contains a fixed number of questions.

### Structure of the College ASSET Test

Here is a brief description of the three main sections of the ASSET:

1. Reading Section - There are 24 questions in this section. They include paragraph and passage comprehension, drawing inferences and conclusions.
2. Writing Section - This section has 36 items. These items help to judge the test-taker on the basis of his or her grammar and skills pertaining to sentence structure construction.
3. Mathematics Section - There are 32 items in this section. Concepts of simple calculations, ratios, percentages etc are tested in this section of the test.

### Registration and Test Taking

The cost of taking this test for basic skills is 155\$. Depending on the course you wish to join, the educational institution or college will ask you to take the basic skills test only, or the basic level of test along with the advanced Mathematical skills test.

### How do Colleges Use the ASSET Test?

Colleges make use of  ASSET  in their enrollment processes. There are many ways in which they use the scores of the test.

1. To Analyze the Test Takers

This test evaluates students based on certain basic skills such as calculations, comprehension, grammar etc. These skills are essential for continuing education. Hence, the test gives a fair idea of the student's skill profile. By analyzing the score, the college can come to know of the strong or weak areas of a candidate. For example, if the college is enrolling students for a course in creative writing. The college will not select the students who did not fare well in the section of writing skills.

The colleges get a parameter on the basis of which they reject or select students. The selection or rejection depends on:

2. The score of the basic skills test and
3. The score of the advanced skills test, if taken.

For instance, if they have 50 seats available for a course in mathematics, they will not select any test taker who has not appeared for the advanced mathematical skills test. Out of the remaining aspirants, they will select the test-takers having the highest scores in advanced skills test of ASSET.

3. To Evaluate the Skills

The ASSET test also gives a common ground for the different colleges to compare various candidates. They are able to evaluate important skills over a large spectrum. For instance, they may come to know that a particular student is very poor in comprehension. Thus, the college will not accept the student in to any such course that involves drawing inferences or written material. Similarly, students poor in mathematical skills may be denied enrollment to courses such as finance, engineering etc.
